Semper Fi: Business Leadership the Marine Corps Way by Dan Carrison and Rod Walsh applies the tradition of Semper Fidelis to business leadership principles and business management practices from the “recruit training” that will become the new industry standard, to instilling confidence and leading from all levels, everything that is necessary to attain success is put together piece by piece. The book includes experiences and portrayals of individual members of the United States Marine Corps that can be directly related to the business world.

Topics of focus include recruitment and training. The book starts with recruitment. The authors give tips and useful tactics on how to recruit the best people. They emphasize that the applicants with the flashiest resumes are not necessarily the people to hire, but the applicants who seem the most dedicated and seem to have the most integrity are the best option regardless of their past experiences or credentials.

An emphasis that the authors focus on is the meticulous training of the newly hired employees, or as the United States Marine Corps describes it: Recruit Training. The idea of employee training is a hands-on approach that covers every aspect of what the new employee will be required to do and how efficiently they will be expected to complete tasks that are given to them.

Another main goal to instill in the new employees that the book clearly illustrates is for them to achieve a sense of loyalty to the company. The employees should strive to represent the company in the best way possible at all times and view themselves and as part of something much larger than themselves. Instead of each employee working towards their own individual paycheck, they will be working together to accomplish a shared goal or mission objective.

The book demonstrates how to "bias employees to victory". It also illustrates how negative or selfish attitudes and personal jealousies can lead to the downfall of any organization and is to be taken very seriously. From the moment an employee is hired they are encouraged to be the best and not accept anything less than that. The authors explain how the concept of “market share” should be cast out of the employees minds and how they should strive for “market supremacy.”

Equality and respect are also important factors that play a part in the main scheme of the book. Females are told to be confident and are taught how to excel under the circumstances of being under pressure by their male co-workers. In business, unlike in the military, sexual harassment is strictly forbidden. The book states that all employees should recognize sexual harassment in the work place and report any incidents that may arise. Employees are instructed to refrain from participating in destructive habits as well.

While focusing on equality, there is to be an even sense of “esprit de corps” throughout the levels of the organization. This translates into a positive attitude and good morale in each employee. This leads to employees having belief in their employer and belief in their objectives which leads to the overall success of the company.

In a nutshell, the authors attempted to translate the Marine Corps motto into management stragegies and visions that can play an important and valid role in the overall productivity and achievement of a company.
