Tiffindell

Tiffindell Ski Resort in the Eastern Cape near Barkly East has been hard at work for the last 6 months restoring one of South Africa’s national treasures, to full operation. Tiffindell re-opened in 2013, and operates for the Southern Hemisphere winter months of June - September.

Tiffindell Resort was established in 1993, and grew from small beginnings to a fully equipped winter snow resort with state of the art snowmaking and grooming equipment, ski lifts, restaurant, ski shop, ski school and conference facilities. The multi-million rand family resort lies on 30,000m² of groomed ski area and offers a full three months of skiing each year by way of natural and man-made snow.

Developments for the 2013 winter snow season include the enlargement of one of the Tiffindell dams, to four times its original size increasing the snowmaking capacity. The road has been graded between the hamlet of Rhodes and Tiffindell allowing vehicles to reach the resort hassle-free in clear weather conditions.

Tiffindell offers slope lengths of around 1.3 km in total and with natural snow falls you could ski from the highest peak in the Cape Province.

Tiffindell has been the proud host of most South African National Ski & Snowboard Championship events since 1993 in cooperation with Snow Sports South Africa and the National Ski Federation. In 2013, the resort will play host to the Tiffindell Junior Ski Competition (July 2013) and is the base for the Tiffindell Ski & Snowboard Club

Tiffindell employs permanent staff and works to uplift the local communities with training and skills development. Local suppliers are used wherever possible and the Eastern Cape Highlands communities and farmers have always enjoyed a good working relationship with the resort. Tiffindell Ski Resort’s 2013 winter season is from June until early September 2013. Tiffindell Ski Resort is the only ski resort in South Africa.

Located in the Eastern Cape Highlands, South Africa and was established in 1993 The resort is built on Ben Macdhui and has a relatively high elevation of 2720 metres above sea level (3000m at the peak).

Location

Tiffindell is situated 24 km north to the town of Rhodes and about 212 km east of Aliwal North. 2WD, 1300cc vehicles with no trailers, can reach the resort in dry conditions only via the route from Rhodes.
