Excerpt: Nitroarenes have been reported to show fairly strong mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium, and their mutagenic activities have been demonstrated without addition of the metabolic activation system, S9 mix. The specific mutagenic activities of some nitroarenes are very high, and these compounds have been named supermutagens (1). Some nitroarenes are air pollutants (2) and are present in automobile exhausts (8) and carbon blacks (4). Thus the biomedical impact, and especially the significance for human carcinogenesis, of these nitroarenes is.
