Excerpt: I. BEFORE DINNER. ?I was walking along the shore towards Goring. It was pitch dark. The tide was out. I could see the wet sands gleaming in the darkness. Far out at sea were the lights of two fishing?boats. And that was all. On the landward side there was not a glimmer. The place was a howling wilderness. It was just as though I were alone in space. A keen north?west breeze was blowing. I could hear the moan of the receding waves. The sound seemed to come from miles away. It was cold.? The speaker paused. He seemed to be describing, when he continued, a scene which was actually at that moment taking place before his eyes.
